ADDING TO the plethora of news channels on television, here is yet another 24-hour Hindi channel which comes with the promise of "responsible reporting, fresh faces, world-class technology and an international look". Yes, India TV promoted by well-known television presenter, Rajat Sharma, went on the air on Sunday with a prime-time election special. This non-stop three-hour show will ultimately lead to the launch of 24-hour programming on India TV in the third week of May.
Mr. Sharma, whose Independent News Service has such programmes as "Aap Ki Adalat", "Aaj Ki Baat" and "Aaj Subah" to its credit will be joined in this venture by Tarun Tejpal of Tehelka fame. The in-depth analysis and minute-to-minute coverage will be amply supported by an equally strong infrastructure. "The three-hour comprehensive election special - Chunaav Ki Baat - will feature election news and direct interfaces with politicians alongside in depth reporting on the constituencies and the campaign activities of various politicians," says Mr. Sharma. Also, the channel when fully operational promises to provide its viewers a world-class experience with its state-of-the-art technology. The channel's broadcast centre in Film City at NOIDA is spread over 80,000 square feet and has fully automated digital news rooms. Already, it claims to have four world-class studio floors with multi-camera setups and computer-controlled lighting especially designed for 24-hours live news broadcast. Also, it boasts of having the largest television studio floor in Asia designed specially for audience-based shows. "This studio floor has been planned to revive shows like Aap Ki Adalat and Awaaz on a mega-scale," informs Mr. Sharma. Indeed, the combination of Mr. Rajat Sharma and Mr. Tarun Tejpal's diverse journalism styles during the three-hour election special will provide viewers with a keen and incisive look at the election. Unlike other channels which provide staggered election coverage over 24 hours, India TV's election specials will be three-hours non-stop reporting and analyses. In his latest venture, Mr. Sharma is also joined by his wife, Ritu Dhawan, who has 16 years of experience in television production and broadcasting. "My idea is to give India TV an international look and ultimately make it into a global bland,"
